5 Helpful Tips For Improving Your Home’s Security

Have you ever had to deal with a burglar or an intruder in your home? Or have you woken up at night worried you forgot to lock the door? Security and privacy are crucial to feeling at peace in your home, and you often don’t get one without the other.

Knowing you have good home security can put you at ease and let you truly enjoy your space without worrying about any outside intrusion. These simple steps can help you achieve better security and with it better privacy.

1. Lock Up

Use locks on your home, including windows and all entrances, that work well and can’t be easily manipulated into the opening like a mortice lock. Don’t use a door with glass right by the handle where someone could break it to gain access.

And create a system to help you remember to lock up your house. It’s a good idea to lock your doors even if you are home because sometimes a locked door is all it takes to make someone move on.

2. Stay Well Lit

Keeping your property well-lit in certain areas can help keep it safe. No one wants to be seen breaking and entering, so security lighting can be a great defense, and you can find lights that are solar-powered so it’s more cost-effective too. Using motion sensor lights can be a great way to save on energy, help you find your way in the dark, and alert you to someone on your property.

3. Arm an Alarm

Using an actual alarm system is a great way to protect your home. It won’t always keep intruders out, but it will likely deter others from trying your house.

If you use a security system, try to avoid having the name of the system on a sign out front. A generic sign is fine and can be used even if you don’t have a system, but if you name the company and system you use someone could break in with that information.

4. Out of Sight

Keep your valuables out of sight when you’re gone so in case someone does break in they won’t have such easy targets. You can get a safe or find a secure hiding place for things to keep those from getting nabbed or tempting someone to break in initially.

5. Keep it Private

If you are going out of town, don’t tell the whole neighborhood. Your social media account doesn’t need to know the exact dates and location of your vacation. It can alert burglars to an easy target and if your account isn’t private you never know who has access to that information.

Safety, Security, and Privacy

There are a lot of ways to ensure your security and privacy, but these tips should help you get started. Staying safe doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and plenty of these can fall under common sense when it comes to staying safe.

If you do feel at risk, be sure to notify authorities and neighbors so people around you can help and keep an eye out. Using things like home security cameras and lighting can work well, but make sure you find what works best for your home and you.
