College Students Should Be Encouraged to Pursue Subjects That Interest Them

One of the greatest highlights of an individual’s life events is entering college for the first time. And the crucial part of this major phase is choosing what course to take. Students should be given the liberty to determine what subject to study following their will, rather than the courses that seem most likely to lead to jobs. Pursuing the course that interests the students would motivate them to learn, to develop all the requisite skills and knowledge to be ready for the real world and to be successful in their future endeavors in the long run.
People who do what interests them the most turn out to be happier and more motivated. Motivation is described as a state that energizes, directs, and sustains behavior. It directs behavior toward specific objectives. For example, if a student eagerly works on a difficult mathematical problem, again and again, this would illustrate a higher level of motivation towards math activities. So, if the students are inspired by the course that they’ll be studying, they’ll easily get motivated and sustain that behavior until graduation.
Selecting the right course is also important because it can help students focus their interests and learn more about a field they’re interested in studying in college, and also to acquire all the necessary skills and knowledge they need to be ready for the real world. According to columnist Blake Boles, “Real learning thrives when students have real choices,” Students will be more focused on learning if they have the interest in the course that they chose. And once the focus is there, everything else will follow. Learning skills and having knowledge will be just a walk in the park.
The goal is to be successful in life, whatever decision was made. That is why it is imperative to be mindful in deciding especially for the significant events in life. And continuing the course that interests them would encourage students to learn, develop all the skills and knowledge they need to be ready for the real world and to excel in their future efforts in the long term. Just like what Billy Joel Said. “If you are not doing what you love, you are wasting your time.” Let’s not waste time given to us just by not following what our heart tells us.
